Lyrics: Looking deadbeat and battle scarred, I am that person that you meet in bars In a no-win situation Ideas above my station I live in glory and I live in hope, I played piano ‘til may hands got broke I sing for supper and I beg for whiskey London baby you’ve been good to me The world seems uglier tonight It’s got it’s head screwed on too tight As the rain gets louder and the wind gets chill Trafalgar Square seems so still So leave me here where the sun don’t shine And night-time falls like a heavy heavy sigh The world seems uglier tonight, It’s got it’s head screwed on too tight I gotta’ get a life before it’s all too late, I gotta’ get a job but I’m just too lazy I clear my conscience and I clear my throat I Pull a bottle from beneath my coat It keeps the cold out when you’re by the river But nights like this they can go on forever The world seems uglier tonight It’s got it’s head screwed on too tight I won’t fall but then I might, It’s got it’s head screwed on too tight I gotta’ get a life before it’s all too late I gotta’ get a job but I’m just too lazy

Lyrics: See I’m a case in kind, showing all the tell-tale signs Of a man losing his mind because of a woman She knew what she was doin’, when she led me to rack and ruin Into town she just blew in then split one day I got some coke and I got some speed and it brought me to my knees I couldn’t get no sleep and my nose was bleeding So tell me man what’s yours?, I need your best hangover cure My gear's cut but my heart is pure and I’m still needing And the radio plays sad songs on the airwaves I rue the day she went away Now a year or more has passed,I’m still living way too fast As I raise another glass to a new day dawning These nights can get so savage, I’m broken and I’m damaged But I guess I’ll manage like I always seem to do And the radio plays sad songs on the airwaves I rue the day she went away And my head starts spinning, round and round and round and round Feels like I’m falling down and down and down and down and down I better face the facts, she ain’t coming back I better smarten up my act or else I’m done for And the radio plays sad songs on the airwaves I rue the day she went away And the radio plays, and the radio plays, and the radio plays, and the radio plays, and the radio plays, and the radio plays, and the radio plays, and the radio plays

Lyrics: Running up that hill, trying to keep my balance But on occasion I’ve been known to stray the straight and narrow Been told to shut my trap, thou shalt not this and that I’ve been on my knees when everyone was standing I’ve practised self restraint, trying to find the key to heavens gate But like the rest of all creation, I’ll be stranded at the station This movie’s gonna’ run and run and run But I’ll be praying for salvation when my train comes I’ve been party to, some things you shouldn’t do But does it count if you regret it in the morning Been tempted by the bait, but more inclined to take Up any challenge without a second’s warning I’ve practised self restraint, trying to find the key to heavens gate But like the rest of all creation, I’ll be stranded at the station This movie’s gonna’ run and run and run But I’ll be praying for salvation when my train comes When my train comes When my train comes When my train comes When my train comes When my train comes When my train comes When my train comes When my train

about

These are the first recordings of London's newest beat combo, Brigadé Junk. Committed to tape and posterity 'under heavy manners' but with zen-like surety of the session's potential, in Spring '19, at Map Studios, just North of the River Thames.

1) Deadbeat Blues - The Beat shenanigans and 'angel headed hipsters' of late 50's San Francisco, supplanted to 21st century London Town.

2) The Radio Plays - A tale of love lost, and one's natural in-built reaction to such a predicament. A song for drunkards and ne'er do wells to hopefully take inspiration from, and solace in.

3) When my Train Comes - Questioning one's own moral fibre and whether regret and feigning interest in some kind of spiritual guidance will ultimately get you off the hook when the Grim Reaper comes a callin'. So, big themes and of course, train analogies, clocking in at just over a minute and a half.

A missive from the front line:
Brigadé Junk – here is a group working in a distinctly 20th Century medium. No year zero approach for this lot - but in this instance, that’s no bad thing. Taking their cue from those late 70’s musical powerhouses, The Attractions, The Stranglers, The Clash, The Blockheads, The Rumour et al, they’re trying to re-create a certain passion, vibe, work ethic and artistic truth that was omnipotent back then and connecting it in some surreal but linear way, to the here and now. They’re also using their literary heroes, and in particular The Be-at Generation (another quaint 20th century endeavour), to help them articulate their confusion, frustration and horror with the modern world, whilst simultaneously revelling in its overwhelming beauty and wonder – a piece of piss eh?

So all praise to Kerouac, Ferlinghetti, Huncke, Bukowski, Dylan and the rest for inspiration, advice and drinking tips.
And the women? too many to mention, but a quick tip of the titfer to Patti Smith, The Ronettes, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Vivienne Westwood, Anita Pallenberg and Yoko Ono should give you a view of who these cats dig in the sisterhood.

As for an ethos, their singer recently quipped "back in the day, Joe Strummer once said, when talking about his fledgling punk rock outfit, ‘We're anti-fascist, we're anti-violence, we're anti-racist and we're pro-creative. We're against ignorance'. It seems to us, even in these cynical times, those are still pretty good standards for a group to operate to. We can but fucking try".

So, if it's a soundbite you're after, here goes - lyrically sussed, musically tough, sartorially rough, politically just and philosophically bust, should just about cover it.

Look Sharp!

No permission was sought or granted for the beat poet's contribution, but it was plundered with absolute love and respect, whilst proudly brandishing our own poet's (poetic) licence - we're assured, from someone in the know, that he would approve (Bukowski, on the other hand, perhaps not).
